On August 6, AMISOM troops occupied the Konis Stadium in Mogadishu after Al Qaida-linked extremist insurgents vacated the city following operations launched against them by the Somali National Army with AMISOM’s support. The success of the operations eventually led to the extremists retreat from the capital, creating a relatively secure space which the government is exploiting to provide humanitarian supplies to the famine-hit population.
