The return of Fal-Had

PRESS RELEASE

The return of Fal-Had

20TH January 2012; On 9th September Ms. Fal-Hd abdall Abdi was accidentally hit by a Ugandan Contingent casspir in Karan ditrict, Mogadishu. The accident occurred when the steering wheel on the casspir locked, causing the driver to loose control of the vehicle and accidentally hit 9 year old Fal-Had.

She was severely inured on her right thigh as her muscle tissue and blood vessels were torn apart by the wheel of the casspir, thus restricting the blood circulation to her limbs. Her fema was fractured and the skin was torn away from her right ankle and upper leg limb.

AMISOM’s investigation and consequent support

A board of inquiry was formed by the Ugandan Contingent to investigate the accident. It was determined that AMISOM would take responsibility for the accident and ensure that she receive medical treatment, guarantying that they would take care of the total financial cost of treatment.

She initially received medical attention at the AMISOM level II hospital where she was an in-patient for 3 months. Intensive medical care was administered to the patient to restore and reattach blood vessels on her upper leg that had been significantly injured. The doctors took great care to ensure that her leg was not amputated due to a lack of blood circulation to her limbs.

On 13th September she was flown and taken to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, to receive treatment for the internal fixation of the bone, as required equipment to do the procedure was not available at the AMISOM level II hospital. The operation was successful and she will continue to receive physiotherapy to aid her recovery and hopefully have her walking without support in a month’s time.

Fal-Had returns today from Nairobi and will be received by her parents at Mogadishu International Airport. AMISOM will continue to support the people of Somalia on the road to full restoration of peace and security.

Fal Had, a 9 year old child who was hit by an AMISOM caspir in early September, returned to Mogadishu on Friday after AMISOM financed her recovery surgery and treatment.
