The AMISOM Military Component is the biggest of the three components of the AMISOM Mission (the others being Police and Civilian components). As at 13th September 2011, AMISOM had 9,595 troops mainly from Uganda and Burundi.
The Military Component of AMISOM is mandated to conduct peace support operations in Somalia and seeks to stabilize the situation in the country, creating the necessary conditions for the conduct of humanitarian activities and an immediate takeover by the United Nations. The component provides protection to the country’s Transitional Federal Institutions as they carry out their functions and guards key infrastructure including the Adden Adde International Airport, the Sea Port and State House (Villa Somalia). It also protects AMISOM personnel, installations and equipment.
The component is popular with the Somali population due to its provision of various free services, including an in-patient and out-patient medical service as well as a reliable supply of purified water.
