National Leadership Forum agree on implementation of key instruments to fast track Somalia’s electoral process

The National leadership Forum ended on Saturday in the southwestern town of Baidoa with an endorsement of the official list of 135 elders, who will oversee the selection of clan voters, who will pick the 275 members of parliament in August polls.

The move expedites the electoral process, which is expected to end in September after the conclusion of presidential elections.

In a communique issued at the end of three day Forum, a committee to advise and give representation status to Mogadishu and Banaadir region was also appointed. The 19-member committee will consist of representatives of the Federal Government, regional states and Banaadir region, which is yet to achieve regional status.

“We did, and we will do what is best for Somalia, some of which may not be possible or realized today. There are many things that are good for Somalia but cannot be achieved today but can be achieved in the future. We have discussed and agreed on many things. We will, from now onwards, move towards the elections at the required time. We are in the final stages of the many efforts and activities of the National Leadership Forum,” said Somali President H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, in his remarks during the closing of the National Leadership Forum.

President Mohamud reaffirmed the Federal government’s commitment to honouring the elections timetable.

“I am confident, as was clear in the communiqué, that the timeline and activities to be undertaken in 2016 until 2020 will be happen as planned. We are now experiencing a situation where we are having elections at the regional level and we hope to hold grassroot elections come 2020,” stressed President Sheikh Mohamud.

In the communique read by the Federal Minister of Information Mr. Mohamed Abdi Hayir Maareeye, the Forum approved a budget and schedule of activities leading to the August polls.

The communiqué affirmed the commitment of the National Leadership Forum on women’s political participation in the electoral process.

The three day Forum brought together leaders from the Federal government, regional presidents, Somalia’s key partners and representatives of the international community.

AMISOM is working in-conjunction with Somali Security Institutions to ensure a secure environment for the elections to take place.
